  9. penix :

    i got 31 out of 40…some of these are really hard

    hint for 6: nuclear _______, its a pc game

  10. Philip :

    i got 24 total, pretty nice for some1 born in 1986 é?

  11. Karl :

    30/40 (and I am one of the “older generation”, I do not know that many of the newer titles)

    16 is a popular Jump&Run (has several Sequels) for PSX and Saturn
    26 is a very old classic from Roklan Software for Atari VCS, XL, C64
    27 LucasFilm Adventure with a two-headed squirrel
    29 all-time classic for C64 from System 3 (who would carry weaponry like a katana, shuriken and nunchakas?)
    31 classic space trading game from Firebird
    35 classic game from Palace Software

    I have the same problem with 38, I think I really know the game, but my solution is not accepted

    I still need 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 18, 20, 30, 36, 38.

  12. Karl :

    31/40
    I finally got around number 38; hint: two words, great multiplayer game from Hudson Soft.

  13. KillerKuh :

    Come on 38 is easy… little hint:
    “xxxx blaster”

  14. RoCKo :

    You have 38 correct game screenshots so far… i just need a hint of 18 and 26.See ya

  15. Karl :

    @ Rocko
    I don’t know 18 either. As for 26, a very old classic from ROKLAN.

  16. Karl :

    @ Rocko again
    18 is a LucasFilm/LucasArts Adv. from the beginning of the Nineties, published a little later than “Day of the Tentacle”, it includes several words from a very famous Ray Charles Song (from 1961) in its title.

    Still looking for number 36?!

  17. RoCKo :

    OHH YESS!!! i finished the quiz it was v ery great play with him. See ya

  18. eszpee :

    Congratulations, RoCKo, head on to the sequel at

    http://quiz-em-all.com/8-the-great-computer-game-quiz-sequel/

    :)

  19. Karl :

    @ RoCKo or anyone who knows
    how about a hint for 36?

  20. Goobermunch :

    I’ve got all but 28, 34, 36, and 39. Any help would be muchly appreciated.

    –G

  21. Bad Maniac :

    Some hints:
    28: it’s so hard it’s almost…
    34: rock run
    39: Team17 classic

    But what on earth is 36?

  22. hehe :

    [solutions were posted here. hehe, please do not be one of those who can’t/won’t read before shooting. - ses]

  23. odicin :

    You have 38 correct game screenshots so far…

    But I need help at 30 and 36!

  24. Padawan :

    36 is a great Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game… 3 games in all, has something to to with a weapon..

  25. Padawan :

    36 is a great Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game… 3 games in all, has something to to with a weapon..

    ps. i think that was the easiest :P

  26. rico :

    36 is the predecessor to number 2 in the sequel quiz. Completely different name. Turn based squad combat.

    30 is the great grandchild of 21. :)

  27. eszpee :

    And besides 36 was my favourite game on C64, and basically the best computer game ever, damn, for playing with friends I even created my own levels with a hexa-editor!

    I do understand that it did not help at all, but I just had to share it. :)

  28. Karl :

    @eszpee
    I am glad you liked that game on C64 and appreciate you sharing your memories with us ;-), but unfortunately you are right, it really did not help me much.
    :-( Shame on me, I know!

    @padawan + rico
    thanks for the hints, can you give another clue, for example the first letter of the game and/or the release year? Since I did not play the “successor” (number 2 from the sequel quiz) and although I got that game right, I do not know number 36.

  29. apeekaboo :

    For those who know 38 but your answer won’t get accepted:
    You have to split the name, and it’s not the name you see for newer versions of this game either…

  30. odicin :

    Very well done!
    Yes! I’ve got all 40! :)

    Thx@rico for your hint to 36. This was the hardest for me.

  31. dante :

    geez ..

    google tells, what 10 is ..

    :-/

  32. chesko :

    I still need help on 10, 22, 34 and 36. The others are solved.

  33. chesko :

    10 finally solved, still stuck in 22, 34 and 36.

  34. Miss Psycho :

    Only 3…
    but im loosing my memory ¬¬

  35. odicin :

    @chesko

    From 22 there was later a “gold” version for pc.

  36. dme :

    got all but 28, any hints?

  37. Karl :

    @dme
    no. 28 is possibly my all-time favourite on the C64, also available for Master System. Made by Epyx in 1984, features incredible speech for that time. the bad guy in that game is called Elvin Atombender. There is a spy movie with Tom Cruise, Jon Voigt, Emmanuelle Béart, Kristin Scott Thomas etc. with almost the same name. If you know the name of the movie, just swap the position of the two words (last->first), and you have the game title.

    Now for #36 again! Another hint please, then I can concentrate on the second quiz.

  38. damion :

    @Karl

    hint no36:
    - predecessor from x-com
    - 2 word title: 1st needed for new eye-operation, 2nd the police … rushes the bank

    I hope that helps

    greetz, Damion

  39. Anders :

    Hi there! I REALLY need to know the name of 34!! It was one of my favourite games on the C64 but i can’t remember the name!

  40. Flipkin :

    I posted that they stole all the images from MobyGames. Instead of replying they just removed the post. Very cool people.

  41. randy :

    guys, i also need hint on 34. HELP me out!!! :D thanks

  42. eszpee :

    Flipkin, you commented about the image steals on the second part of the computer game quiz, not here; and I answered there as soon as I saw your accusations. Both comments are still there.

  43. Karl :

    thanks for the hint, damion, that should help.

    as for #34
    two words
    1st: synonym for “large rock”
    2nd: olympic event: 100 m …

  44. Karl :

    hah, finally, it is done!

    I have finally found out no 36 thanks to your hints. Shame on me, I have never heard of that game at all, but your praises have made me curious.

  45. freakzz :

    :) - great quiz. but I only got 29 right so far. anyone care to give me some hints for 2,4,5,6,8,12,15,18,20,23,24? thx!!

  47. buddy :

    Can anyone help me?!
    I know no.1 i can even remember the sound the stupid thing makes but i cant think what its called :(

    PLZ

  48. Karl :

    @buddy
    the hero of that game has an “aristocratic” title, he is not an Earl, but a ….!

    @ngggggrr
    come on, you know no 12, definitely! Famous action+logic game by DMA Design/Psygnosis from 1991 where you have to guide lots of little creatures to an exit.
    no 8: regarded as the best mission based first person shooter, from Valve/Gearbox, the successor can be purchased via the internet through the notorious “Steam” portal.

  49. Vinterskugge :

    What about Nº 10?

    I tried writing a lot of rpg games but got nothing. :/

  50. Fenril :

    Well…

    31/40…

    Stuck on 20, 23, 24 (but i’m sure i know this one :-p), 26, 27, 29 (played a lot on this one, can’t remember the name :-(), 36, 37 and 39.

    @Vinterskugge
    Think about a game where you can ask help from Robin Hood 3 times ;-)

  51. Fenril :

    Shame on me… finally got 39. How can I forgot about this game :).
    Start playing it and you’ll feel infected by the virus (little hint :-p).

  52. Vinterskugge :

    Fenril, do you have another hint please???????????????

  53. Vinterskugge :

    Im also stuck in 36, 22 and 33.

  54. Karl :

    @vinterskugge
    hint for no 10?
    famous game from Master Designer Software/Cinemaware from 1985. Strategy title, not rpg. “someone who fights for his king” is called a …….. .. … …..!

  55. Karl :

    @vinterskugge again
    hints for 36 are listed above.
    no 22: famous simulation title from Microprose back in 1987.
    no 33: “god game” that made Peter Molyneux famous, from Bullfrog/Electronic Arts, 1989.

  56. Mysterio :

    @ Fenril:

    27 is a very very old Adventure by Lucas Arsts - even older than Maniac Mansion, I think.

    37 is really easy - steeling cars, shooting guys :)

  57. Geburah :

    Could someone give me a hint for 7 and 14?
    Thanx!

  58. Veritas :

    #24 left, need a clue!

  59. Softis :

    what is 24? Wea e totally lost on that one

  60. Geburah :

    Hint for #24: A mix of spacebattles and cinematic storytelling starring Mark Hamill

    Gimme som hints for #7 and #14 in return!

  61. Vinterskugge :

    Sorry but I didn’t catch the hints of 36!!! Another hint please!!!

  62. Vinterskugge :

    Maybe the first name…..

  63. Geburah :

    Hint for #36:
    Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
    +
    A small military unit subordinate to an infantry platoon.

    Please give me hints of #7 and #14 in return!!!

  64. Karl :

    @vinterskugge
    here is th ehint for 36 again
    damion (April 8th, 2005 at 1:10 am ):

    @Karl

    hint no36:
    - predecessor from x-com
    - 2 word title: 1st needed for new eye-operation, 2nd the police … rushes the bank

    I hope that helps

    greetz, Damion

    @Geburah
    hints for 7 and 14:
    no 7: adult adventure from Sierra, created by Al Lowe back in 1987.
    no 14: famous racing game by ECA, recently went “underground”;-).

  65. Thumper :

    Jeez, only 18 years old, I just can’t handle this.

    I got 16 of them though, not bad at all! Thank you PC Gamer and your 50 best games of all time!

  66. ShadowGamer :

    Bah am only 15 and I’ve gotten 25 so far with out any help =P

  67. Vale :

    Urgh… I need 26 & 27.. can anyone help me? I tried with all roklan games (castle hassle was the most attinent I guess) and all the lucas adventure (labyrinth, zack, franky and loom included) but was unable to get the shot.. !

  68. Vale :

    Is not important your age.. but the age of the GAMER in you! HUZZAH! dehehe

  69. Karl :

    @vale
    then you missed some of them. The Game has three words, abbreviated W….. o. W..
    The Lucasfilm Adventure you are looking for is already in your list, your spelling is wrong, it does not have a “ck”. Also be careful about the spelling of the rest of the name.

  70. Vale :

    Aie! Thanks Karl! I got the one from roklan. Still Z. give me some trouble, can you tell me how many words are in?

  71. Vale :

    done, there was a mistaKe in my spelling :P thanks again :)

  72. Race :

    I’m stuck on 2, 6 and 19, any help/hints greatly appreciated !!

  73. Vale :

    The protagonist of the 2 is a detective, the kind of person very lonely and obscure.
    6.. rpg game, we have the first and the second episode. The third was cancelled but brethsheda took the rights to write it.
    19? Whatch out! A three headed monkey!!!

    Sorry for my -not-so-perfect- english guys ;)

    Bye!

  74. Race :

    Thanks for 6 and 19 but I’m still no nearer with number 2 - any more hints anyone?

  75. Karl :

    @race

    no 2: opposite of “TOGETHER in the LIGHT”

  76. Phant :

    Ahh! Done with all but 11… Clue?

  77. Snuffe :

    Got 35 straight from memory. :)
    I have no idea concerning 26, 27 and 32…
    Help?

  78. Snuffe :

    32: Dammit! I had never seen the colour version…. >_

  79. Vinterskugge :

    What a shame!!!!!!!

    I still can’t discover 36.

    Itried a lot but nothing…

  80. HerrieM :

    36: Damion’s hint at nr.38 helpt me
    Two words. First a *****-eye surgery
    Second word. a group/gang
    11: the game is mentioned in a hint of Karl

  81. Dach :

    OK, I got all of them except for 3 and 9 (I know I’ve never seen any of those before). I SHOULD have 24, but I typed in the name of EVERY LucasArts game ever made, and it didn’t accept anything I put in. I know it must have something to do with Star Wars, since there’s a Wookiee in the picture, and someone else mentioned Mark Hamill in the one and only hint for it. So, I guess I need someone to tell me exactly what I need to type into that box to get it to accept it.

  82. Karl :

    24 is a famous game by Chris Roberts, two words are enough, ehre are the initials.
    W C (no kidding)

  83. Karl :

    @dach again
    game 3 is part 2 (I think) of one of the most famous real-time strategy games,
    game 9 is a part of a famous role-play series by Squaresoft, the hero is called Cloud Strife.

  84. Dach :

    OK, I got 9 and 24. Not any closer to 3. I’ve never played a RTS in ly life, unless you count Civilization.

  85. anthor :

    in the last part for 3 they sent the Generals and not in the final hour

    24 has nothing to do with star wars, and the wookie is a kilrathi

  86. Dach :

    Sorry, hints relating to gameplay do me no good at all, as I know I’ve never played it or seen it. Unless someone provides clues as blatant as those in Comments 75 and 80, I’m not ever going to guess it. I think I’m at peace with that. I wish I could walk away from the Corporate ABC quiz as easily.

  87. HerrieM :

    @dach

    for 3 the colour of the tanks is part of the name. And it’s from westwood

  88. Karl :

    @dach again
    part three or four of that RTS game is actually called: Generals, and it is distributed by EA.
    Another part is called “Tiberian Sun”.
    The part in question is part two.
    You should know the series by now, the title includes a colour (-> top of traffic lights).
    Two words are already enough to solve it, only the “subtitle” is needed.

  89. Dach :

    OK, I got it with a great deal of help from Google. Thanks. It’s definitely one I’ve never heard of before. I had heard of the first part of the name (the part it won’t accept, which I had typed in there but it got rejected), but I didn’t know the names of any in the series.

  90. Bob :

    What is number 38? I think I’ve tried every combination of Bomber and other words there is..

  91. HerrieM :

    Bob, to make it verry clear for you.
    The word you mention isn’t part of it’s name. The name has somthing to do with shoting, not dropping.

  92. Karl :

    @Bob
    you are not completely on the wrong trail. The game has a different name on other systems. It is from Hudson Software, consists of two words. D B

  93. leonami :

    I’m stuck on 11, 18 and 32… help please!

  94. HerrieM :

    11: I already written that in one of KARL’s hints this game is mentioned. Just look at his hints and you will find it

    18: A dog and a bunny are some sort of private detectives. Also the game is from LucasArt

    32: Mabey the!!! Most!! Classic!!! Game Ever. First game to come on a consule.

  95. Vinterskugge :

    Finally, I completed it!!!!!!!!

  96. eszpee :

    Congratulations! :)

  97. Lukas :

    dammit,

    I’m done with all but 34, 26, 13 an 6

    any hints?

  98. Lukas :

    ok 6 and 26 left…

  99. Lukas :

    26 left

  100. Lukas :

    yesssssssssssss!

    i’m trough with it *g*

    all 40 games

  101. ses :

    congratulations, Lukas! :) are you now on to the sequel?

  102. relict :

    Trouble with 39. Please, give a hint :(

  103. yoogle :

    It’s frustrating that the name checking is so strict.. like all the two-word games have be written as two words, when they’re usually written as one. and that #38 has to be D—B—— when B—–M– is just as correct..

  104. alfons :

    please give me hint about 25#

  105. relict :

    #25 - This is one of the first FPS. It has modern sequels.

  106. LOBO :

    Hi guys!
    got some problems with 20, 30, and 32…
    any tips or hints? thanks!

  107. yarr :

    37/40.

  108. MiFuNe :

    A little hint for those who still not know number 38:
    Search in Google for “Bomberman Blaster”
    It’s written in the second match.

  109. MiFuNe :

    Some hints:
    20- It’s a very popular Sid-Meier-Strategy-Game.
    30- It’s the successor of the most-sold game ever.
    32- Oh, come on! There are two rackets, one ball and a boundary line. It isn’t that difficult, is it?
    Sorry for my english, I didn’t practice a long time^^

  110. soki :

    need more hints for 1 and 16 please X_X

  111. Lord Abaddon :

    Made it! Damn 26, really difficult to get…

  112. Lord Abaddon :

    If anyone is still missing 26…
    1st word: A magician’s teacher
    3rd word: the waging of armed conflict against an enemy (mispelled on porpouse)
    Hope i helped a bit ;)

  113. Lord Abaddon :

    No. 1: 1st word: a British peer of the highest rank (not that hard… c’mon)
    No. 16: BeamPerson (think on related words)

  114. SuperKing :

    Only number 13 left,anyone!!I’going crazy here!Hints?

  115. j. doe :

    If anyone still needs help with no.6, here’s some info on the game:
    The game’s predecessor was an RPG called Wasteland. The game itself was developed in 1998. by (now former) Black Isle Studios and was published by Interplay. The first two games were pure turn-based PC-only RPGs, while the third one (which is not exactly a sequel to the other two) is more of a tactical game, and was published for PC and consoles. The last sequel was being developed under a name Van Buren, but was cancelled when Interplay shut down Black Isle. Now it is developed by Bethesda Softworks (the makers of Morrowind).

  116. Dave(tm) :

    Only 1…
    37 don’t know
    8 is interesting. It is a crowbar. :-)
    13 2 movies were made from that game. You can see: “Sonya wins” … “Finish him” :-)
    26 Beware of the spelling. 2nd word has to be written another way
    32 “table-tennis” … only 1 word
    Any other help needed for someone (but what the … is 37 :-) ?

  117. Dave :

    All but 14, 37, and 40…totally stumped on those =/

  118. radhookoo :

    14. great to play in multyplayer… the last 2 in the series allow you to modify cars in a unique way..
    37. i loved chatterbox radio..
    40. there are more in the series… he has brothers…

  130. ses :

  131. Crim :

    I wish someone would finally give a hint for 11, because I searched the whole section, and Karl says nothing about 11.

    11 is the last one I need before I try the second one.

  132. HerrieM :

    @ Crim.

    Karl mentions this game in a hint about one of the other games.

  133. Pat :

    YAY! Got them all on the first try. But then, I’ve been a gamer since pong originally came out :)

    Well, lots of old memories (I’m 42 years old).

    Got 38 out of 40.

    I know that #18 is some Lucas arts SCUMM graphic point & click adventure game, but anything before Day of the tentacle or maniac mansion is too hazy - so I gave up on that one.

    #39 is pretty much the same thing: can’t remember what it is even if it does look so familiar.

    anyway, it’s been fun.

  138. mrz :

    You have 35 correct game screenshots so far - go on!

  144. Nidhogg :

    Gosh, it took me a while, but I finally got them all. And from these 40, I played all but 4 myself. ^^

  145. Nidhogg :

    11) LucasArts, had something to do with 34 in the second quiz.
    18) The sequel to this was almost done when the publisher decided to kill it. There was a major outcry from many fans of the original over this.
    25) “Mein Leben!” Lots of swastikas… recently there was some sort of sequel where you “went back” to that place.

  146. mO :

    ahrg ,, i really dont know what 18 is .. i’ve nerver seen it, i’ve never heard about it and I dont know who published it, what the sequel is/was and so on ^^
